  • Alex de Minaur impresses with a victory over Andrey Rublev in Rotterdam, entering to the semifinals.
  • Jordan Thompson shows resilience in the Delray Beach tournament but falls short against Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.
  • Despite some setbacks, Australian tennis talent is on display, with De Minaur’s success and Thompson’s ranking potential reflecting the nation’s growing presence in the sport.

Alex de Minaur, the young Aussie tennis sensation, is on fire this year! He just defeated Andrey Rublev, who’s ranked fifth in the world, to reach the semifinals in Rotterdam.

Their last match was a nail-biting five-setter at the Australian Open, where Rublev came out on top, denying De Minaur a spot in the quarterfinals. But this time, De Minaur turned the tables with a 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3 victory.

This win not only marks De Minaur’s second consecutive victory over Rublev in Rotterdam but also boosts him to a career-high ranking of No.9 in the ATP live rankings. His record against top-10 opponents in 2024 is impressive, standing at 4-1.

De Minaur shared his strategy after the match, saying he had to be brave and play aggressively against Rublev’s powerful game. He knew he couldn’t just run around the court; he had to back himself and go after the ball. His confidence paid off in crucial moments, securing him the win.

Next up for De Minaur is a semifinal clash with Grigor Dimitrov, where he’ll aim to reach his fifth career final at the ATP 500 level.

Over in Delray Beach, Florida, Aussie Jordan Thompson fought hard but was ultimately knocked out of the tournament by American Tommy Paul. Despite a valiant effort to claw back in the first set, Paul’s strong form prevailed, extending his winning streak to six matches after winning the ATP title in Dallas last week.

Thompson’s quarterfinal run could see him break into the top 40 when next week’s rankings are released, marking a significant milestone in his career.

In another match, young Australian Rinky Hijikata faced tough competition against top seed Taylor Fritz, who secured a 6-3 6-3 victory to advance to the semifinals. The Delray Beach lineup now features an all-American semifinal with Fritz, Paul, Frances Tiafoe, and Marcos Giron.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good day for Aussies in the doubles quarterfinals either, as Andrew Harris and Dominik Koepfer were defeated by Diego Hidalgo and Cristian Rodriguez.

Both De Minaur and Thompson’s performances showcase the talent brewing in Australian tennis, with promising young players making strides on the international stage. With their determination and skill, they’re sure to continue making headlines and inspiring the next generation of tennis stars Down Under.
